WORD Poster Campaign, 2011
WORD is a poster campaign from 2011. Various posters were placed around the University of California, Santa Barbara campus with offensive words that are commonly used by the campus community. Behind the words are photographic depictions of what the dictionary definition of the word actually means. The posters also includes a QR code that directs students to a website, which explains extensively why these words are offensive, as well as their etymology and how they came to possess the colloquial, derogatory meaning they have today. This project is intended to encourage the campus community to engage in a degree of conscious thought before choosing to use certain words derogatorily. This was a group project made possible by the help of several other UCSB students.
